The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office has received several calls today from citizens reporting a scam. In each case the citizen reports receiving a telephone call from a person identifying themselves as Sergeant Jason Cook with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. “Sergeant Cook” identifies a relative of the victim and states that if the victim does not come up with money then their relative would be arrested.
This is a scam call. Law enforcement will not call a citizen demanding money. If a person is arrested on a bond-able offense, law enforcement MAY provide that individual with the phone numbers of available bonding companies. Law enforcement is also prohibited from recommending one bonding agent over another.
The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind our citizens not to give out personal or financial information over the phone or over the internet.
