ELUDING INCIDENT LEADS TO CRASH

On September 17, 2020 at approximately 5:20 a.m., the Pueblo Police Department received information from a GPS-based vehicle security/tracking service (“tracking service” herein) that a stolen pick-up truck was parked in the 1100 block of E. 12th Street. Officers converged in the area but did not locate the truck.

The tracking service soon began providing the truck’s direction of travel to the department, which indicated that it was moving toward Pueblo’s south side. An officer located the truck driving southbound on Pine Street at Mesa Avenue. The driver of the truck then turned onto westbound Northern Avenue and was driving in a safe manner. Responding officers coordinated with the tracking service to activate the truck’s flasher lights so that the officers had visual confirmation that they were following the correct vehicle. Upon confirming that they were following the stolen truck, the officers coordinated with the tracking service to disable the truck’s engine. Prior to the tracking service being able to disable the truck’s engine, however, the driver of the truck suddenly accelerated away. The officers continued traveling in the same direction as the truck awaiting the engine to be disabled by the tracking service, which occurred near the intersection of Northern Avenue and Berkley Avenue. The truck then collided with a retaining wall in the 1200 block of Claremont Avenue and the officers were able to take the driver and the passenger into custody. The driver was identified as 33-year-old Ayryel Duran. Duran was booked into the Pueblo County Detention Center on the charges of Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft, Vehicular Eluding, Reckless Driving and Driving Without a Valid License. The passenger is not currently facing any charges.

The information contained in this press release is based on preliminary information available at the time of its drafting. The Pueblo Police Department’s understanding of this incident may change as additional evidence is collected, analyzed and reviewed. The purpose of this press release is to provide timely information to the public. In consideration of the foregoing, please be advised that any statements expressed herein are subject to change at any time.
