HOLIDAY SAFE SHOPPING/CRIME PREVENTION SAFETY TIPS

WHILE SHOPPING

1. Park in well-lit areas. Try to avoid parking by trees, large dumpsters, trucks/vans, or anything else that limits the visibility of you and your vehicle

2. Take a moment to scan the area surrounding your vehicle when you park and when you return to your vehicle

3. Never leave your vehicle running unattended or with pets/children inside

4. Avoid carrying large purses and large amounts of cash with you

5. Carry your purse on your front side and across your body close to you

6. If you have a panic button on your key fob know how to use it to create noise if confronted by a suspicious person(s) when entering or exiting your vehicle

7. Consider purchasing a whistle to have in case you are confronted by an unwanted person(s)

8. Lock your doors immediately after entering your vehicle

9. Never hide spare keys in your car. Thieves know where all the hiding places are

10. Never leave purses/wallets or any other items of value unattended in your vehicle

13. If you leave store purchases in your vehicle, lock them in your trunk or keep them in a non-visible area. Criminals do watch for shoppers who place purchases in their vehicles and leave them unattended

14. If your credit card is lost, stolen, or misused, notify your card issuer immediately

*Again, always be aware of your surroundings. If you see something or someone suspicious in the parking lot or store please notify security, store employees/management, and/or call the police.

AT HOME

1. Be certain that you are locking your doors and windows when you leave your home

2. Be cautious and cognizant of suspicious vehicles/people in your neighborhood

3. When leaving home for an extended time, have a neighbor or family member watch your house and pick up your newspapers, packages, and mail

4. To prevent Porch Pirate thefts schedule packages to be picked up from deliverer, purchase lock box, deliver to your work or other family member who will be home

5. Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied

6. Consider indoor and outdoor lights on an automatic timer

7. Try to stake holiday décor deep down into ground or tie to prevent theft

8. Consider purchasing a doorbell camera

9. Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home

10. When setting up a Christmas tree or other holiday displays, make sure doors and passageways are clear inside your home

11. Be sure your Christmas tree is mounted on a sturdy base, so children, elderly, or family pets cannot pull it over on themselves

12. If you use lights on your Christmas tree, ensure the wiring is not damaged or frayed; frayed or damaged wiring can cause a fire

13. Cut down the boxes of gifts you have received prior to placing them in your trash can outside (Criminals love to see what you just received)

14. Be sure to update your Record of Belongings list (serial numbers, descriptions etc. on your items of value). This form is available at www.pueblo.us/police under Crime Prevention Tab
