Today, FDA warned the public not to use hand sanitizer products containing methanol or wood alcohol, which can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and life-threatening when ingested: https://go.usa.gov/xwSmC
We’ve seen an increase in hand sanitizer products that have tested positive for methanol contamination. State officials also reported recent adverse events from adults and children ingesting hand sanitizer contaminated with methanol, including blindness, hospitalizations, and death.
FDA recommends consumers immediately stop using these hand sanitizers and dispose in a hazardous waste container or as recommended by local waste management center. Do not flush or pour these products down the drain or mix with other liquids.
We’re communicating with manufacturers & distributors of these dangerous products about recalling them. Here is a list of FDA-tested and recalled hand sanitizer products: https://go.usa.gov/xwSmg
