Firefighters’ efforts yielding results on YMCA Fire; 60% contained

Current Situation: Firefighters continued making progress on containing the 293-acre YMCA Fire near Canon City, CO. By Saturday afternoon, the fire was 60% contained and remained at 293 acres. Despite hot and dry conditions over the fire today, fire behavior was minimal. Afternoon winds tested containment lines constructed by crews over the past couple of days and the lines held. One Type 1 helicopter was assigned to the fire today, but due to the downturn in fire activity, no bucket drops were necessary.

Although containment increased again today, smoke may be visible from Canon City and neighboring areas. Interior fuels and portions of the inaccessible north edge of the fire are expected to continue burning in the coming days and may produce smoke as temperatures rise into the afternoon.

As containment grows, the Type 3 team managing the fire will consider what resources will be necessary to continue work on the YMCA Fire. In the coming days, some crews will be made available for other assignments or returned to their home units to prepare for future fires in the region.

Weather: Temperatures are expected to be in the low-to-mid 60s overnight with minimum humidity expected to be as high as 58%. Winds will be out of the east until 10 p.m then light for the rest of the night.

Fire Restrictions: Fire restrictions are in place on Bureau of Land Management-Royal Gorge Field Office lands, US Forest Service-Pike San Isabel National Forest, and Fremont County.

Temporary Flight Restrictions: A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place over the YMCA Fire. Wildfires are a No Drone Zone. If you fly, we can’t. Every time a drone is spotted near the fire all aircraft are grounded until we can be sure the drone is clear of the area. For more information, visit http://knowbeforeyoufly.org.
