Myth: A COVID-positive patient is tested many times throughout their stay, and when each time the test comes back positive, it is counted in the county and state numbers as a unique, new case. The implication of this myth is that the county, state and national numbers are purposefully inflated.
Truth: This is patently false. A COVID-positive patient is only reported one time to the local and state public health officials. EIRMC has been transparent about the number of COVID-positive patients in our facility at any given time. It is true that we may order additional testing during a COVID-positive patient's stay, if we think the patient may have cleared the virus. A negative test result indicates 1) the patient is recovering and 2) our staff can reduce the amount of PPE necessary to care for a COVID-positive patient. But… if the patient continues to test positive, it is NOT counted as a new case.
