The Sheriff’s office has received several questions about the length of time it is taking for applicants to receive their Concealed Handgun Permits. Since we transitioned to an on-line application this year some applicants believe the delay is related to our new computerized system. This is not the case.

After an audit of our program was conducted, we know delays are directly related to the deluge of CHP applications flooding the CBI offices, as well as a backlog due to COVID-19. As of 1:00 PM on July 30th, 2020, CBI had over 5000 background checks in que along with over 3000 firearms purchase checks. CBI is attempting to manage this workload with only six staff. We urge our applicants to be patient. Once we receive the completed background check the rest of the process normally takes only two or three days.
