In order to keep you informed about a delay to the start of the school year for LPMS only, we are sharing the email below that was recently sent to LPMS families.
Please join us in sending Mr. O’Connor and his family well wishes at this time.
Dear Lewis-Palmer Middle School Families,
I am writing to inform you that your principal, Mr. Seann O’Connor, is currently staying home because of symptoms consistent with COVID-19. It is not known at this time if the symptoms are due to COVID-19 or another cause. This step is consistent with health and safety protocols.
In these types of communications, we do not typically share the identity of the staff member involved. We share the identity (with Mr. O’Connor’s permission) due to the high profile nature of his role. Please join me in sending Mr. O’Connor and his family well wishes at this time.
In consultation with El Paso County Public Health officials, several other LPMS staff members have been identified as a close contact of Mr. O’Connor and are therefore also quarantined at this time. Staff members who are identified as close contacts have been contacted personally by a D38 staff member. For a definition of what constitutes a close contact, and other related information, please visit this website: https://covid19.colorado.gov/cases-and-outbreaks-child-care….
As part of this public health investigation:
• Any staff member who is symptomatic will remain out of school while they are further evaluated for COVID-19.
• The people who are considered close contacts of a symptomatic staff member have been asked to stay home and quarantine until we know the COVID-19 test result.
• If the COVID-19 test result is negative, and any close contact remains asymptomatic, close contacts are immediately released from quarantine.
• If the staff member who is being evaluated is found to have COVID-19, then all close contacts should remain quarantined through August 27, 2020, with a return to work and school date of August 28, 2020.
In light of all this information, D38 is continuing to proceed out of an abundance of caution and has determined that LPMS will not begin school until August 24. During the week of August 24-28, LPMS will operate fully on a Distance Learning schedule. The earliest that an in-person/hybrid learning schedule would commence at LPMS would be Monday, August 31.
LPMS staff will spend the extra time next week training to ensure that we are well-prepared to begin the school year in a Distance Learning model. In the meantime, please look at the D38 Distance Learning Guide. It will provide you with an overview of what to expect. Additional information will be shared with LPMS families from LPMS staff early next week.
Let me restate: We are delaying the start of school at LPMS and implementing a full Distance Learning schedule the week of August 24-28. This delay ONLY applies to LPMS as a precautionary measure at this time. A decision about an in-person/hybrid return to LPMS will be made when it is deemed safe enough to accommodate our plans for a hybrid schedule. We will continue to keep you informed on next steps as they are determined.
District Administration is providing extra support to LPMS Administration at this time. Please direct any questions to firstname.lastname@example.org. This will help alleviate the impact on your LPMS administrative staff and get you the assistance you need.
This is an appropriate contingency measure to our Back-To-School 2020 Plan. We will continue to actively consult with El Paso County Public Health officials in order to best protect LPMS students, staff, and families. I am deeply grateful for your patience and understanding as we pull together to safely support each other and our community.
Standing strong with you,
K.C. Somers, Ed.D.
