Press Release
Salida Police Dept.
October 8, 2020

Over the last several weeks, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, Buena Vista Police Department, and Salida Police Department have been working jointly investigating multiple vehicle break-ins and motor vehicle thefts in our area. During this time, we have been working on multiple leads, interviewing individuals, and even recovered multiple vehicles along with a several stolen guns.

Today, we were able to locate our main suspect in the majority of the vehicle break-ins and motor vehicle thefts in our area. With the information we had and nature of the suspect, we called for the assistance of the Chaffee County Tactical Team to apprehend the suspect. While the Chaffee County Tactical Team was responding, Salida PD Officers spotted one of the reported stolen vehicles. Through our investigation, it was believed that our main suspect, Mack Hill, 24 Salida, was in the stolen vehicle.

Due to the fact that Hill had numerous felony warrants and was already involved in a vehicle purist with Salida Officers two weeks prior, officers decide to converge on the suspect while he was near the trailhead by Burmac.

As officers descended on Hill above the trailhead, he drove away in the stolen vehicle. The vehicle was travelling at approximately 30-40 MPH as it approached a patrol car that was parked near the bottom of the trailhead. The vehicle then slammed into the front driver’s side of a patrol car that was occupied by two Salida Police Officers. The force caused substantial damage to the patrol car. The officers involved were not seriously injured.

After hitting the patrol car, Hill sped off, almost hitting one of the officers. A pursuit then began eastbound on Hwy 50. Around mile marker 230, Hill threw a gun out of the window across highway 50. The gun was later recovered. A few miles down the road, the vehicle Hill was driving had mechanical issues and came to a stop. Officers were then able to place Hill into custody without further incident. Hill complained of injuries, so he was transported to the Heart of the Rockier Regional Medical Center for a medical clearance. Once cleared, he was transported to the Chaffee County Jail.

Hill was arrested on five outstanding warrants. Two of them were no bond warrants and the other three totaled $10,500 in bond. Hill was also charged with the following:

CRS 18-3-206 Felony Menacing
CRS 18-3-201 1st Degree Assault on a Peace Officer
CRS 18-9-116.5 Felony Eluding
CRS 18-12-108 Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender
CRS 18-3-208 Reckless Endangerment
CRS 18-4-409 1st Degree Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft
CRS 18-4-501 Criminal Mischief
CRS 42-3-121 Displayed Fictious Plates

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, Buena Vista Police Department, and Salida Police Department are still actively working this investigation. As we continue, there will be additional arrests and charges to follow.
